I like this city.
Today was great. We slept in then walked Ipanema Beach. We went to a juice bar (a Rio staple) where I had this awesome mango juice. We then hopped on the metro to the centro where we went to the highly recommended Confeitaria Colmbo, a cafe that pays homage to the glory days of Rio with beautiful granite tables and bars, giant glass cases, and more mirrors than blank space on the walls. I had a chocolate Brazilian specialty and an orange drink. It was like stepping back in time, very cool. We then walked more of the centro to the escadaria de selarĂ³n, a staircase covered in tiles created by a Chilean artist. We continued walking through the Santa Teresa neighborhood and met some locals and talked to a police officer with a machine gun (they're all over the place--they make me feel safe but put Caitlin on edge). After making pasta in the hostel we went back to the beach for ice cream and to watch Brazilian volleyball in which no hands are allowed--only feet, knees, chest, shoulders, and head. It's a very difficult game but the group we saw playing was very good!
Beach, Sugar Loaf, and steakhouse tomorrow. Still super hot; the cariocas (natives) all walk around with swimsuits on and the guys rarely wear shirts.
